Planet NW Heads into 2003 on a Strong Note

Planet NW ended 2002 on a strong note by sponsoring “One World,” a reception highlighting the importance of US funding for international family planning (IFP) programs. Held on December 15, the event provided the audience with a variety of perspectives and insights into the importance of family planning programs.

This event was characterized by the wide range of perspectives represented by the group of speakers, including, 34 Million Friends Campaign co-founder Jane Roberts, US Representative Adam Smith, (D-WA, District 9) and Dutch Senator Ans Zwerver. Pulitzer Prize Winning Editorial Cartoonist David Horsey was the evening’s MC.

With Roberts leading off the evening talking in-depth about her grassroots efforts, Representative Smith then discussed the role the US needs to play in family planning.

“America needs to be leading the way in helping the rest of the world gain access to these critically important health care services—perhaps the most important health care services for half the world’s population, women,” Smith said. “It is my fear that instead of doing more, America will do less for the developing world, increasing hostility towards us at a time we simply cannot bear any more hostility.”

Dutch Senator Zwerver closed the evening expressing a similar view, “We cannot isolate ourselves and safeguard peace, democracy, freedom of speech, stability and prosperity in our own enclave,” Zwerver said. “We cannot ignore whole regions of the world.”

Planet NW hopes to continue hosting these types of events in 2003 to promote local awareness and involvement in efforts to increase US support for IFP programs.
