As the European Population Forum in Geneva draws to a close, coming
to grips with high fertility rates remains a daunting international challenge,
particularly in the poorest countries of the world where population growth
continues to outstrip resources, place pressure on the environment, and
exacerbate social disintegration.
We Europeans do not really play a central role in the current discussions about Europe, though. This is not merely the fault of governments that would prefer to make all political decisions among themselves without interference. The fault also lies with us; European citizens who do not make their voices heard on a European level, who demand too little and remain uninvolved.
GroenLinks heeft zich, samen met andere groene partijen in Europa, van meet af aan ingezet voor het bijeenroepen van een Conventie om een Europese Grondwet te ontwerpen. Het voorstel kon worden verwezenlijkt toen de onderhandelingen tussen de Europese regeringsleiders in 2000 voor de zoveelste keer waren uitgelopen op nationale koehandel achter gesloten deuren, met het magere Verdrag van Nice als resultaat.
